The following Potential Threats are posed by mrt.exe:
- Malware can have any name and often uses filenames of other processes to disguise itself and not to stick out. Because the mrt.exe process always runs in the background, it is a favorite target for Trojans.
- If the mrt.exe file is found in a directory other than C:\WINDOWS\System32\, it is probably a security risk in the form of a Trojan.
Information about the mrt.exe process
The mrt.exe process is part of the Microsoft Removal Tool and is created to remove malicious software. The program isn't included in Windows, but is offered as an optional download or is (automatically) offered through Windows Update. It checks your PC for certain shadow software and can remove it, if you want, but it doesn't offer any protection in case of a potential attack.
